Disable Automatic Updates With Group Policy Editor

On Windows 10, the option for disabling automatic updates is hidden by default. Users can go to the Group Policy Editor and change the settings to make the disable option visible and disable the automatic updates feature on Windows 10 device.

  1. Open Start.

  2. Enter the following text in the search box: msc

  3. Now, go to Computer Configuration.

  4. Click on Administrative Templates.

  5. After that, go to All Settings.

  6. In the menu, locate the entry for Configure Automatic Updates.

  7. Double-click on the entry and click on the Enabled option located in the upper left-hand side.

  8. Now, you can edit the Options given at the base.

  9. Click on the drop bar.

  10. Go to the option for Allowing local administrator to choose the setting.

  11. Choose the option for disabling automatic downloads.

  12. Open the Control Panel, and click on System and Security.

  13. In that window, go to Windows Update.

  14. Choose Change settings in the next Window.

  15. An option stating the following: Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them will display.

  16. Click on the option.

Your Windows 10 PC will check for available updates but not download them unless you provide permission for the same.

If you do not want your Windows 10 PC to even check for available updates, then you can do the following:

  1. Open the Group Policy Editor.

  2. Go to All Settings.

  3. In the drop-down list locate the following: Configure Automatic Updates

  4. Click twice on the entry.

  5. Select Disable.
